BorgWarner Showcases EV Charging Expertise and Global Strategy at 2023 XEV Battery Tech Forum and New Energy Integration Summit
Held in Hefei, the concurrent 2023 XEV Battery Technology Forum and New Energy Storage-Charging Integration Industry Conference featured the selection of top battery industry enterprises. Li Hengjie, BorgWarner's Head of Technical and Sales for Photovoltaic Energy Storage and Charging Solutions, was invited to deliver a keynote speech titled 'Ultra-Fast Charging Technology Development and Its Application in the Integrated Photovoltaic-Storage-Charging Field.'
Global EV Charging Landscape
Li highlighted that there are approximately 12.7 million charging piles globally, while 2022 saw 10.65 million new energy vehicles (NEVs) sold worldwide. China leads in both NEV sales and charging infrastructure, holding over 50% of the global market share. He predicted that 2023 would mark the dawn of ultra-fast charging vehicle development, with ultra-fast charging models expected to account for 52.5% of sales by 2030. As EV and battery technology advances, improving battery energy density makes ultra-fast charging development increasingly urgent.
BorgWarner's Charging Solutions Strategy
BorgWarner is committed to providing cutting-edge charging solutions for NEVs. Li outlined several key initiatives:
Addressing Industry Quality Challenges
The 2023 Charging Pile Industry Research Report reveals a 10% failure rate within six months of installation, with modules, cables, mainboards, cabinets, and software being primary culprits. To tackle this, BorgWarner New Energy (Xiangyang) will invest RMB 63 million to enhance quality control, adopting IATF 16949 standards and agile development processes. These measures aim to reduce operational costs, improve user experience, and boost overall industry quality standards.
Charging Toward Global Leadership
As a pioneer in automotive components, BorgWarner has championed electrification through strategic initiatives like the 'Charge Forward' campaign launched in 2021, followed by the 'Charge Forward 2027' strategy. By 2025, the company aims for electrification products to account for 35% of total sales, rising to 49% by 2027. To maintain its edge, BorgWarner plans to allocate 19% of net sales to electrification R&D by 2023.
Strategic Acquisitions and Global Expansion
BorgWarner has strengthened its electrification portfolio through acquisitions, including Songzheng's light vehicle motor business, Rhombus Energy Solutions, drivetek AG, and Zhuiri Electric (now BorgWarner New Energy). These moves, along with the acquisition of Eldor's Electric Hybrid System (EHS) division, have created a comprehensive grid-to-wheel ecosystem. By 2027, BorgWarner forecasts over $10 billion in electrification sales, solidifying its global leadership.
Building a Global Charging Network
Through strategic acquisitions in Europe, North America, and Asia—including UK-based Sevcon, US-based Rhombus, and Zhuiri Electric—BorgWarner has established a tripartite charging infrastructure. BorgWarner New Energy (Xiangyang) is expanding DC fast-charging markets in Asia while reinforcing the company's global capabilities in quality, engineering, supply chain, manufacturing, and sales.
Innovating for the Future
Committed to innovation and sustainability, BorgWarner continues to refine its charging solutions to meet evolving market demands. By leveraging technical expertise and staying attuned to industry trends, the company is poised to drive high-quality development in the automotive sector, delivering smart, reliable charging solutions that empower the future of mobility.
